Welcome
If we consider that no other country has done so much towards making the automobile the most successful form of transport on the planet, it becomes clear that America must have an incredible amount of opportunities available to those who would like to tour it by hire car. One of the most popular options in recent years has been to take a trip along one of the old routes. Before the interstate highways were constructed, there were many of these routes which wound their way across the country, possibly the most famous of these is Route 66, which was once known as the “main street of America” until it was superseded. It runs from Chicago down to Los Angeles and covers a distance of almost 2,500 miles.
This makes an excellent fly drive expedition, flying in to either Midway International Airport or O'Hare International Airport in Chicago and picking up a hire car from any of the international hire companies such as Hertz, Avis, Budget or Sixt which maintain premises in the airport. Once on the road, spend a couple of weeks travelling Historic Route 66 before dropping off your rental car at one of the five international airports in Los Angeles such as Los Angeles International Airport or Long Beach Airport, before hopping on a plane and heading home, an incredible way to get a taste of the USA before the Interstate Highways took over and the auto trade along Route 66 declined and eventually died out.
